Artificial intelligence is getting better and better. Games are a good test for AI, and have historically been used often as a test case. For an informal history from xkcd, I like this image:
The problem is that you can have a computer being pretty good at a game without having any intelligence. The question ‘What is intelligence’ is a hard one.
General Game Playing (GGP) tries to solve this. It says a computer system is only intelligent if it can play ANY game (expressed in a certain language). This makes more sense as a criteria for intelligence to me than choosing an arbitrary game such as chess!
